EXPECTED DIVIDEND YIELD (EDY)

Image
Basically there is a difference between expected or forward dividend yield and trailing dividend yield because when one invests in stocks, the past does not necessarily equal the future. Expected dividend yield measures next year's expected dividends as a percentage of a stock's current price, using the last year dividend payout whereas the trailing yield uses the present year dividend as there is no guesswork about trailing yield for the dividend is already out so one can know the yield. The expected or forward yield shows the annual percent return one can expect to earn from dividends if the company keeps up its payouts. To calculate expected dividend yield we use the formula:  EDY = forward annual dividend rate/stock's price * 100 For example, let us assume stock Y has a current price of #650.00 and a forward annual dividend rate of #24.00. Applying these values into the formula we have: EDY = 24/650 *100 = 3.7% Meaning, if one buys this stock now, one wo...

ASYMMETRIC VOLATILITY PHENOMENON

Image
The asymmetric volatility phenomenon is the observed tendency of equity market volatility to be higher in declining markets than in rising markets. Better still, asymmetric volatility is a situation in which the volatility of a security is higher when the market index is performing poorly than when it is performing well. Asymmetric volatility is a real phenomenon where market uptrends tend to be more gradual and downtrends tend to be sharper and steeper thereby becomes a cascading declines; the daily range in prices tends to be higher during downtrends than uptrends. There has been no consensus reached on the causes of asymmetric volatility, but factors such as leverage and panic(such as the recent equities market structure by NSE or The Exchange) are often attributed to it. How to Get What you want in Bear or Bull Market.

Image
Recently, my cousin came for a seminar at Opebi and afterwards, he decided to pay me a visit although he told 2 weeks earlier. In the course of our conversation, he complained bitterly about an idea he has been trying to communicate to his Boss on different occasions but it always ends in futility. So, I told him to try different approach and be optimistic about it. An optimist will stop doing the same thing because  1. He knows boss is a human, so he can be reached and inspired regarding the idea.  2. Try as many method as possible to make him accept his idea. This is no different from the stock market either in bull or bear market. If your strategy is not working, you have to be an optimist who will stop doing the same thing because you know people are still making good returns in a bear market. Then like the advice to my cousin, try as many method as possible until you find the most effective one and this can be done through further know...

How to Emotionally Manage a Bear Market

Image
Bear market is brute hit on the stock market. It is just like the way a locked on torpodeo hits a ship.  Fortunately, bear markets tend to be much shorter than bull markets except in some rare instances. and if you’re properly diversified, you can get through without much damage. On the brighter side, bear markets can provide opportunities to boost your portfolio and lay the groundwork for more long-term wealth-building. Here are 3 practical ways to make bear markets very bear-able (and profitable 1.Reduce Your Stake On Bad Stocks: Bear markets may be tough for good stocks, but they’re brutal to bad stocks. When bad stocks go down, they can keep falling and give you an opportunity to profit when they decline further. 2. Be Patient: A bear market shouldn’t make you sweat. Good stocks come out of bear markets, and they’re usually ready for the subsequent bull market. So don’t be so quick to get out of a stock. Just keep monitoring the company ...

A new report Global Debt Database, by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) wants nations across the globe to put in place automatic stabilizers like tax and spending that move in sync with output and employment to operate fully. The report titled: IMF Fiscal Monitor: Capitalizing on Good Times, drew attention to global debts now at a historic $164tr in 2016, representing 225% of world GDP and representing 12% more than the previous 2009 peak. While global debt level stood at $116tr 2007, China’s debt level soared from just $5tr at the time to $26tr in 2016, representing a 420% leap over the period. According to the IMF, “public debt plays an important role in the surge in global debt, refle...

GTC ORDER

Image
Do you know what a GTC order is? GTC simply means Good Till Cancelled. A good till cancel order is an order placed by an investor/ trader to buy or sell  a stock at a specified price,of which the price remains active until it is either canceled by the investor/ trader or the trade is executed. It offers an alternative to placing a sequence of day orders which expires at the end of each trading day. GTC orders are commonly set to expire within a week to a month after trade are entered on the floor of Nigeria Stock Exchange. Simply put, GTC orders provide investors/traders the convenience of placing orders at specified price points, which can also be referred to as limit orders, that remains in force until they reach an expiration date, either they are executed or are canceled. These orders can be entered to buy or sell stock, or as stop orders. Investdata  Academy
