Post-MPC Meeting: Investors Shed Caution Mode, As NGSE Index Climbs Higher

Image
Market Update for January 27 Equity prices closed higher on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) at midweek as buying pressure increased as if to confirm that investors were waiting to see whether the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would pull a surprise at its first meeting of the year which ended on Tuesday. The exchange thereby extended the bull transition for a third successive session on a high traded volume and positive sentiment for Telecoms, Insurance, Banking, Industrial, and consumer goods stocks, which pushed the composite NSE All-Share index higher. Also on Wednesday, more unaudited results and closed period of companies hit the market in preparation for the main earnings reporting season, even as Livestock Feeds, Cadbury, and Julius Berger, among others released their Q4 and 2020 unaudited reports. The day’s gain pushed the NSEASI made a new 52-weeks high so early in the year, on a renewed buying pressure ahead of the earnings season and

How To Change Your Outcome in This Current Market

Image
Ambrose Here Again,  Fear and ignorance are twin sisters. They are generally found together. Napoleon Hill Different types of fears guide any human. Precisely, 6 types of fear govern our lives whether you like it or not; from fear of poverty to fear of criticism. I will not go into in-depth analysis. However, its effect depends on your response because of E+R=O (E=Event, R=Response, and O=Outcome). So, in today's Market, E(bear or bull Market ) + Response (what are you doing currently, are you blaming the government, Covid-19 effect, MPC meeting, your stockbroker, self-pity, change of strategy by constant learning and research) =Outcome. Hence, this invariably means that you can not control what happens in the market or your life but what you have control over is your response to the event. So, instead of you to stop investing in the stock market or lay low for a while until this phase ends, conquer your fear, don't sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy with informat

NSEASI Resists Further Decline, As Investors Seek Undervalued, Div Stocks

Market Update for January 25 The nation’s stock market, on Monday, recorded yet another mixed session, closing slightly higher, while halting the loss position of the previous session on low traded volume, as investors continue to trade cautiously, while looking forward to Tuesday’s outcome of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The importance of the meeting, the first for the year, as regards Monetary Policy Rate, among others, expected to give investors a direction in the New Year, even as the market prepares for the 2020 full-year earnings reporting season. Despite, the seeming yield adjustment in the fixed income market, Investdata believes that should the MPC members vote to hold rates unchanged, and the CBN would continue the use of unconventional measures such as Loan to Deposit Ratio, to directly intervene in critical sectors of the economy for job creation. This will also help to stimulate the desired economic growth that will influence macroecon

Nigerian Banking Sector: Undaunted By Challenges, Staying Afloat, Keeping Fate

Image
One dominant theme that characterized and therefore, the year 2020 will be remembered for across the globe is the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, especially given the way it changed the entire narrative for the year, making nonsense of the entire outlook and permutations and pushing many economies into recession owing to the consequent lockdown imposed to check the spread of a killer that the world knew next to nothing about. To counter the effects of the pandemic, many central banks, governments and multilateral agencies hurriedly put together a cocktail of solutions to save their various economies and their health sectors from total collapse caused by a virus that altered the course of many nations, leaving a trail of woe and death. On its part, the Central Bank of Nigeria came up with timely precautionary steps, rolling out stimulus packages to fight the effect of the pandemic on key sectors of the economy, even as it led operators in the banking sector and individual businessmen

Amidst First Weekly Loss, NGSE Outlook Strong, As Investors Await MPC Outcome

Image
Market Update for the Week Ended January 22 and Outlook for January 25-29 It was a bearish week, with mixed sentiment, amidst profit booking ahead of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), while investors are on the lookout for the first sign of financials in the coming earnings reporting season. The month of January is gradually winding down and the market remains at its overbought region, resisting further decline by trading above a strong support level- the 41,000 psychological line. In the week under review, the benchmark Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) All-Share index side trended on a very high traded volume and positive breadth. Looking at the global monetary policy trend, many economies are pushing their rates down in a bid to jumpstart their economy again, even while effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation rates remain relatively low. Investdata agrees with analysts who believe that the CBN should sustain its low rates and unconventi

Fear Of Rate Adjustment At Next MPC Meeting Halts NGSE Rally, As Investors Book Profits

Image
Market Update for January 21 Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday experienced a high volatility and mixed session to resume another round of profit taking as market players look to the outcome of next week’s Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), amidst fear that was heightened by the latest FGN Bonds which reopened on adjusted and juicier rates for long tenored bonds. This signals the possibility of a change in monetary policy, depending on the voting pattern of MPC members during their meeting, the first for the year, holding next week.   However, Investdata believes that if the low rates and unconventional monetary policy of the CBN is to drive economic recovery and create jobs for Nigerians, then the possibility of increasing rates is slim. But, if the goal is to checkmate the rising rate of inflation, the likelihood of an upward adjustment in rates is high. Looking at the rate and pattern of profit booking across the market, one can safe

Mixed Performance, Amidst Profits Taking, Even As Bull Transition May Linger

Image
Market Update for January 18 After a healthy rally in the previous week, trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Monday witnessed mixed sentiments and profit booking in manufacturing stocks amid renewed buying interest in Guaranty Trust Bank, Lafarge Africa, Cadbury, Vitafoam, BOC Gases and Livestock Feeds. These however failed to help the benchmark All-Share index, as it closed lower on a very high traded volume and positive breadth. The change in trading pattern and the holding structure has supported the market so far, despite profit taking during the session as all eyes are on medium and low priced dividend-paying stocks with high yields.  We have always reminded all that market correction, or profit taking is an integral part of stock market investing. As such, Monday’s pullback was not a surprise, even as the NSE index and price action of many stocks are still technically at overbought region. Also, at the risk of sounding like a broken gong, we have often enjoined invest
