NGX Index Slip, As Investors Position Ahead Upcoming MPC Meeting, Q2 Earnings

Image
Market Update for the Week Ended May 17 and Outlook for May 24-28 It was a bearish week, as the Nigerian Exchange Limited reversed previous week’s gains on selloffs in highly capitalized stocks, made worse by profit taking, just as investors and traders repositioned their portfolios on the strength of Q1 numbers and economic data. This is also coming ahead of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Monetary Policy Committee meeting, as well as month-end and the half-year earnings reporting season. The downward trend came in the midst of high volatility, as the NGX All-Share index’s action broke down various support levels on a less than average traded volume as revealed by the volume pattern. The action and pattern exemplify the uncertain economic environment, given that one indicator can come out positive but deceptive, since it does not reflect overall economic realities. Being the last trading week in the month of May, the market may oscillate, depending on the MPC meeting outcome. ...

Your only ticket to safeguarding you against circumstances you can't control

Ambrose Here Again, To earn more, you must learn more. Brian Tracy The above quote is not really new to me but it solidifies more of what you and I already know. That is, it is not really something strange to you. A classical example is your qualifications, just close your eyes and imagine that you are stuck to the conventional method of stock market. What will be the status of your investment portfolio today?  I am sure that you will find it inconceivable and your mind won't want to imagine it because you are seeing a future of stagnation and bankruptcy especially in this current economic situation. Similarly, when it boils down to stock education , if you don’t have the knowledge, then you cannot earn more.  So, if you are serious about protecting yourself against the government and economic policies, which are beyond your control (whether you like it or not). You must learn more so that you can protect your family, friends, and love ones against the effect of the eco...

Blue-chips Propel NGSE Index Further, Amidst Month, Quarter-end Rebalancing

Image
Market Update for March 25 The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) continued its uptrend on Thursday with the composite All-Share index closing higher, thereby extending the bull transition for the second successive session at the peak of earnings reporting season. Money flow index revealed the entrance of the funds into equity space as corporate actions and high dividend yields continue to attract demand for blue-chip stocks and high cap equities in hot sectors with strong potential to grow sales in the current financial year as events in the economy unfold. The NSE index action broke out the 39,000 mark to trade above the shortest moving averages of 7, 14 and 20, confirming a short rebound in the midst of positive dividend news, despite the rising yield in the fixed income market to support the recovery move. This is likely to linger for some time and trigger a major breakout in April, depending however on the Q1 corporate earnings and economic data in Q2. It is therefore important t...

NGX Trades Below 14DMA, Amid Lingering Concerns, Mounting Uncertainties

Image
Market Update for May 18 The nation’s stock market sustained its volatility and mixed trend on Tuesday with 4the composite NGX All-Share Index closed lower on a low traded volume and negative breadth, extending the bear-run for the second consecutive session. The day’s loss followed selloffs and profit-taking in high cap and low priced stocks like BUA Cement, Zenith Bank, UACN, and others, which dragged the NGX index down. The increasing borrowing of the government locally and internationally have remained a source of concern for many investors, especially through bond issuance on rising yields, just as the inflation rate slowed down slightly to 18.12% in April, compared to 18.17% in March. The marginal drop in Consumer Price Index is positive and should support investment within the economy, as investors await the outcome of next week’s MPC meeting and economic news which will largely determine market direction for the rest of Q2 until the half year earnings season kick of...

Nigerian Equity Investors Await April inflation, PMI, Q1 GDP Data, Amid Increased Volatility

Image
Market Update for the Week Ended May 14 and Outlook for May 17-21 It was a bullish outing for the three-day trading week that ended on Friday, following the public holiday declared by the Federal Government to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the month of Ramadan. During the period, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) ignored the increasing spate of insecurity in the country, as well as the rising yields in the fixed market to maintain a positive trend and sentiments. These halted the previous week’s loss position amidst buying interests in undervalued stocks that recently posted better-than-expected Q1 numbers, and ahead of economic data and half-year earnings season. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the April Consumer Price Index, which is expected from the National Bureau of Statistics; as well as the outcome of next week’s Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Monetary Policy Committee meeting. Such economic data and outcome of the MPC meeting will, expectedly, give direction for ...
